If you’ve ever saved a hair inspiration photo and wondered whether you should book lived-in color or traditional highlights, you’re not alone. The finished results can sometimes look similar in photos, but the placement, grow-out, brightness and maintenance can be very different.

What Is Our Lived-In Color Package?

Our Lived-In Color Package is designed to include everything needed to create dimensional, blended color with a softer grow-out.

Instead of booking individual pieces of the service separately, the package gives your stylist the flexibility to use what your hair needs to achieve the finished look. Your appointment is customized around your starting point, inspiration, desired brightness, dimension and maintenance goals.

The focus is on creating intentional brightness while maintaining the depth that gives lived-in color its dimension and softer transition at the root.

And lived-in doesn’t necessarily mean dark or subtle. You can still be a bright blonde with lived-in color. The difference is that we’re intentionally using dimension and placement to create a result that blends more softly as your hair grows.

Our Lived-In Color Package is a great option for someone who loves dimensional color, wants a softer grow-out and prefers more flexibility between major color appointments.

What Are Traditional Highlights?

Traditional highlights are created by lightening selected sections of hair in foils and can be customized depending on how much brightness you want.

One of the biggest differences is that highlights can bring brightness much closer to the scalp. If you love feeling freshly blonde from the root, prefer less depth throughout your color or don't want a noticeable shadow at the root, traditional highlights may be a better fit.

And “highlights” aren't just one service.

At Salt + Slate, we offer several highlight and blonding services in Charleston depending on how much of your hair needs to be addressed and how bright you want to be.

Mini Highlight

Our Mini Highlight is designed for maintenance between larger highlighting appointments.

Rather than re-highlighting the entire head, we focus on strategic areas where brightness makes the biggest difference. It's a great way to refresh your color between full services when the rest of your highlights still look good.

Partial Foil

A Partial Foil focuses highlighting on a portion of the head rather than throughout the entire head.

This can be a great choice when you want noticeable brightness through the areas you see most without needing a complete highlight refresh.

Full Foil

A Full Foil allows us to place highlights throughout the entire head for more complete brightness and coverage.

This is often the better choice when the underneath and back of the hair need to be refreshed in addition to the hair around the face and top of the head.

High Impact Blonding

And then there are the clients who tell us:

“I never feel blonde enough.”

That's exactly why we offer High Impact Blonding.

This service is for someone who wants significantly more brightness and very little dimension. Essentially, it's for the client who wants to feel solid blonde.

High Impact Blonding involves much more extensive foil placement, with foils packed closely together throughout the hair. Because considerably more hair is being lightened and more foils are being placed, this service requires additional appointment time and is priced accordingly.

A traditional Full Foil and High Impact Blonding aren't interchangeable. If your inspiration photos consistently show extremely bright, heavily highlighted blondes with very little natural depth left between the highlights, you may actually need High Impact Blonding to achieve the result you're expecting.

Lived-In Color vs. Highlights: What's the Biggest Difference?

The easiest way to think about it is this:

Lived-in color intentionally keeps and uses dimension. Traditional highlights prioritize brightness closer to the root. High Impact Blonding takes that brightness even further.

None is better than another. They're designed for different goals.

Someone who wants a dimensional blonde with a softer grow-out may love lived-in color.

Someone who wants to see fresh brightness directly from the root may be happier with traditional highlights.

And someone who continually leaves a standard highlight appointment wishing they were even blonder may be a better candidate for High Impact Blonding.

The right choice comes down to the finished result you want, your starting point and how you want your color to look as it grows.

Which Is Lower Maintenance?

Lived-in color generally allows more flexibility between major lightening appointments because the grow-out is intentionally softer.

Traditional highlights taken closer to the scalp will create a more noticeable grow-out. How frequently you choose to refresh them depends on how much regrowth you're comfortable seeing and how bright you like your hair to look at the root.

That doesn't necessarily mean you need a Full Foil every time.

This is where a Mini Highlight can be useful. Instead of automatically repeating your largest service at every appointment, your stylist can determine whether you need a complete refresh or whether strategic highlighting can maintain your color between larger appointments.

How Do We Decide What’s Right for You?

When you come to Salt + Slate for a color appointment, we’re looking at much more than the service name on your booking.

We consider your natural color, previous color history, current condition of your hair, desired brightness, how much dimension you want, where you want that brightness, your maintenance expectations and what is realistically achievable while maintaining the integrity of your hair.

We also want to know what you don't like.

Maybe you don't want to see a shadow at your root. Maybe you love dimension but want to be extremely bright around your face. Maybe you don't like seeing darker pieces through your ends. Or maybe you've had highlights for years and consistently feel like you're never quite blonde enough.
