You read labels at the grocery store. You have thought about what goes on your skin, in your home, around your family. And then you sit down in a salon chair for three hours and breathe in something you would never buy.
That gap is the reason Salt + Slate exists. We are a low-tox hair salon in Charleston, South Carolina, which means we have gone through every product that touches you and every product that fills the air in this room, and we have chosen differently wherever choosing differently did not cost us the result.
WHAT LOW-TOX TRULY MEANS HERE
Low-tox is a phrase that gets used loosely, so here is exactly what we mean by it.
We color with R+Co and Arete, both of which are ammonia free. They perform like conventional color, hold the way you expect, and lift the way you expect.
We did not accept a softer result in exchange for a cleaner ingredient list, and if a cleaner product could not do the job we kept looking rather than compromising.
Every styling and finishing product on our shelves and on our stations is non-toxic. That includes the things nobody thinks about: the shampoo at the bowl, the hairspray in the air, the treatment you never see us reach for.
What we have not done is claim to be something we are not. We are not going to tell you that hair color is a health food. We are going to tell you honestly what is in what we use, and you can decide what you are comfortable with.
WHY THIS MATTERS MORE THAN MOST PEOPLE REALIZE
Most guests come to us for one of three reasons. Their scalp burns during color and they have quietly accepted that as normal. They are pregnant or trying to be, and they want to make a considered choice rather than an anxious one. Or they have simply cleaned up everything else in their life and the salon was the last thing left.
There is a fourth group people forget, which is us. Stylists spend forty hours a week inside the air of a salon. Building this space the way we did was as much about the people who work here as the people who visit.
If you are pregnant, we will happily walk you through exactly what is in what we use so you can have an informed conversation with your doctor. What we will not do is tell you what is safe for your pregnancy. That is not our call to make, and any salon that makes it for you is telling you something they cannot know.
WHERE TO FIND US
We are located at 2500 Clements Ferry Road, Suite H, in Charleston, minutes from Daniel Island and an easy drive from Mount Pleasant, Cainhoy, Wando, Huger, and Park Circle. Parking is plentiful, free, and on-site.

WHAT A VISIT IS LIKE
Following the greeting by our amazing front desk staff, you will be offered a healthy snack and your choice of beverage when you arrive - drink options include Spindrift, Water, Coffee, Latte, Macha, Hot Chocolate, Tea, Wine, or our favorite - a Salt + Slate Signature Latte.
Your stylist starts with a consultation, not with a bowl, because the plan matters more than the speed and we tailor every service to you, your hair, and your goals.
Somewhere in the middle there is a hot towel and a peppermint scalp and shoulder massage, this is included with every service and is something no one has ever asked us to skip.
Following your service, you will leave knowing everything you need to about maintenance and care with honest product recommendations rather than a shelf pointed at you.
